Krithika rated it really liked it Jun 04, The translation itself worked wonders but there were places where I personally felt it could have been even better. There are enough stories, sub stories, characters and plot twists to keep the reader engaged. It was almost the same case with this book too, but I was resolved to finish it off.
This remains to be seen. It takes special talent to narrate a well-known story in an engaging manner, and there, I feel, the author has done complete justice to the book.

To settle into this story, one needs quite some time. With the bare Tamil text running to some pages, not many believed that the translation could be completed because the task would take several arduous, patient, tireless years, and secondly, whether after all that labour and perseverence, the final product would have purpose and relevance to the newer generations.
The storyline is impressive with great narration and good explanation of historic events and culture in the middle. But I needed it. The whole book is an enthralling mix of emotions in a huge jumble that makes it an unputdownable read in places. Jagannathan, one of the seniormost journalists of the country, a scholar and polyglot, has rendered the translation.

The story is introduced to the readers by a brave, young man, pobniyin is a great fighter too, and a messenger of Aditya Chola forgive me if I got my history wrong. The original story is famous for it’s diverse subjects primarily focusing on politics and betrayal. Basic concepts and terms of music Next: The book leaves the era etched into the reader’s mind. It’s been a long time since i read a lengthy novel above pages.
To my utter surprise, the writer has a done a rather commendable job of bringing about the visual imagery.
Quotes from Ponni’s Beloved Life’s good comes not from others’ gift, nor ill Man’s pains and pains’ relief are from within. The characters are well fleshed out and come across as normal human beings prone to known moral virtues and vices like entlish, hate, empathy, jealousy, loyalty, treachery, etc.

Idumban Kari -A footman from Kadamboor, a conspirator against Chozla royalty, member of a gang sympathetic to Pandiyas. The characters are very well written and the plot gets really intense and intriguing. It is a dream of every Tamilian to read this masterpiece of Tamil literature at least once in their lifetime. That being ponnkyin, maybe it was lonniyin for me because I knew both the languages.
The names and places cannot be changed, and the occasional reference to the exhaustive glossary would really help move things welvan. In all these stories the character of Vandiya Devan is the one experiencing all the tales. They are like the help-desk that provides fast and efficient service. Though this book is a translation of a famous masterpiece that has enthralled generations of Tamil readers, the readers for sure will get lost in the majestic rich heritage of chola kingdom.
The cover looked perfectly fitting, of a man’s profile tastefully drawn as a warrior’s pose. A non- Indian reader may find translatiin translation a trifle difficult but the thoughtfully compiled glossary and more importantly the table of ponniyn, the genealogy chart, and above all, the extended introduction by Prof. Usually when a regional classic is translated, sometimes the originality or the essence of that literature somewhat gets lost in translation, but not in this case.

Nallavan Sattanar – Court poet at Tanjore. This attention to detail for words is commendable. This book does a wonderful job in translating the classic. Many authors have written phenomenal books in Tamil literature after Kalki Krishnamurthy, but Ponniyin Selvan remains the most popular, widely-read novel.
