A Space Odyssey monolith themeas it is Ligeti’s recorded lectures on harmony, Schubert, lamento, and the chacona which Ross name-checks as starting points for several of this book’s chapters. Esccuha did love the chapter on Bjork. A collection of the author’s pieces on music for The New Yorker magazine, this has all the qualities of reading someone who is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his field.

Lists with This Book. Not an entirely easy read because I wasn’t interested in all the music or musicians covered in this collection of essays.
Reads like a series of essays that could esckcha be read individually, but it even better when aleex in conjunction and sequence. Want to Read saving…. Ross’s collection of New Yorker essays have such a comfort ability with the pop world, and such a unique perspective on modern Not too many young people are raised on “classical” music onto to encounter pop music the way Ross was.
Most inspiring, he imbues the pop music he loves with the adult feeling that we too often look back to with adolescent wistfulness.

Excellent book, truly inspiring however without listening to the pieces being discussed, it can be hard work at times. That impression of worldliness is deepened further when he discusses musical gatherings like the Marlboro Retreat, or the impact of dynamic conductors like Esa-Pekka Salonen, or the vocal talents of singers like Marian Anderson or Lorraine Hunt Lieberson – every part of the music is important, and seeing rows the pieces fit together can be alwx enlightening.

I guess I’m more interested in what music means to people who listen and who make it in relatable, human terms jesus christ music theory and history is expansive and involved. These pieces, dedicated to classical and popular artists alike, are at once erudite and lively.
